Tell us about yourself
Joined the Cossacks in 1972, went to many rallies all over the country, rode many miles with them and met lots of interesting people. Had a bad smash in 1974 and another in 1976. Was made a life member in October 1981, for my services to the club over the years. Sadly the clubhouse was burnt down in November 1981.
What Bikes/Trikes do you own
picoodle.com
What type of music do you like
Mainly Rock and Blues, but anything that gets my foot tapping is alright by me.
Have you had a Bike/Trike accident that you want to tell us about
Christmas eve 1974 17.50 hrs.
I was riding up Bath road in Cheltenham heading out of town on my way home aftter work.
I had not been drinking.
As i was approaching the junction with St. Lukes road, I saw a white Fiat in the middle of the road, facing me waiting to turn
across my path. As I got to within about 20 ft the car started to turn, I braked as hard as I could but it was too late,
I hit the car on the passenger side headlight, both wrists shattered on impact, as I flew out of the saddle,
my leg wrapped around the windscreen pillar and fractured big time, I carried on flying over the car, and
everything went into slow motion, the glass tinkling all around, i actually felt weightless, then I hit the ground and everthing returned to normal
speed, or possibly a little quicker. I thought thank god thats over, but then it felt like a giant hand reached down and threw me up the road again
this happened about 4 times and I was getting fed up with it, so I decided, the next time I hit the road I am going to try and stand up, what a mistake,
I flew into the trunk of a very large mature Cedar tree.....that stopped me!
When I came round I did a quick systems check.... left arm moved not much pain, right arm moved not much pain,
left leg moved not much pain, right leg SHIT!!!!! dont move that again.... raised head up and noticed I had two knees in my right leg
and I was looking at the bottom of my right foot.
A well meaning pedestrian then nearly strangled me by trying to remove my helmet while it was still done up!
Ambulance finally came, patched me up and put me in the back, then they got the driver out of the car (the bike had flipped over gone through the windscreen
and the back wheel had done a pretty good job of the drivers face) they sat her down on the bed opposite me in the ambulance then went to get the rest of their kit
all of a sudden she starts screaming "Oh my God what have I done" and proceeds to grab my leg.... I started swearing and shouting which brought the
ambulance men running, they pulled her off me and strapped her down, I grabbed the gas and air.....
Because of the state of my leg the ambulance went at about 5 MPH and I felt every bump in the road all the way to the hospital, which luckily
was only about 200 yards away (very lucky as it turns out) when my shin bone came out through the side of my leg it severed the main artery
and I had lost 6 pints of blood..................ouch!!!
Eventualy got to casualty, they cut my clothes off me and the nurses were struggling to get my leather jacket off me, I told them to unzip the cuffs to help get the sleeves
over my wrists, they told me that the zips were undone..............ouch!
Then they found my mates 6volt battery inside my jacket/ribcage..........ouch!
The final score is as follows:-
Severed little toe left foot
Foot rest through right foot
Compound fracture of right leg (tibia & fibula)severed artery
Right knee cap destroyed
5 vertabrea fractured at base of spine
5 ribs broken around 6 volt battery inside jacket
for Nic Sugdens bike (250 Royal Enfield Crusader Sports)
Left & right wrist shattered
5 front teeth through lips and shattered
Fractured Skull, side to side and back to front.
I had an out of body experiance whilst in casualty, I don't know if it was the lack of blood, the amount of morphine they injected me with,
or if there really is life after death. One thing I know for certain when I was out of my body sat on the curtain rail watching the doctors and nurses
franticaly running around my body, it was very nice and warm with no pain what so ever, if a little dark. When they put the pads on my chest and re-started my
heart I came round in my body in severe, yes severe pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got out of hospital 6 weeks later and within 6 months was back on me sickle, 2 years later I did it all over again, but that is another story.
This proves that bikers can fly, it's just the landing we have to work on!!!!!

Hi Cossack

Just wanted to say Hi, I meet the Cossacks club in 75 or early 76 when my A65 broke down after leaving the M5, to get some fuel when the bike died.

A guy on a Honda 750 4 got help from the Cossacks who turned up with a van and took us back to the club house.

It was only the connection to the zener diode that broke but the club put me and the girlfriend up for the night before we went on to Leicester to the UBGB squat.

Nice to see a few pics of the old club house, I came up to Cheltenham several years later and found the name painted on the road, but no club house. now I know why.

I have an old mate Rat who lives in Princess elizabeth flats on Princess Elizabeth way.
